St Hugh’s is working hard to ensure that students are appropriately prepared for life in the 21st Century.
The pace of change means that we have to look carefully at which subjects we deliver and their fitness for purpose. We want students to leave us able to learn, with an
understanding of the world, and an ability to make the most of their potential. We do not have a ‘one size fits all’ approach to the curriculum - encouraging personalised learning and developing independence from Year 7 onwards
Key Stage 3
The KS3 curriculum is delivered in years 7 & 8. B’tec courses are started in Year 9.
We have a strong record of early entry at GCSE in English and Mathematics with
particularly gifted students sitting their GCSE in Mathematics in Year 9. Students with
additional needs have a dedicated teacher who delivers the majority of the curriculum.
Key Stage 4
All Year 9 and 10 students study B’tec First Certificate ICT Practitioners, and choose three of the following:
- Construction
- Engineering
- Land & Environment/Animal Care
- Performing Arts
- Sport
- Travel & Tourism
- Children’s Care
- Diploma in ICT Practitioners
All Year 10 students study GCSE 360 Science.
Other vocational courses offered are:
- NVQ Food Preparation & Cooking Level 1 & 2
- First Diploma in horse care
- Young Apprenticeships in Retail, Engineering, Health and Social Care and Motor Vehicles
All students study GCSE in English language, Mathematics, Science and a large number of students study GCSE French or Spanish.
As a Specialist Community College, all students will also complete the B’tec ICT practioners course, the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) and a touch typing qualification. There are also GCSE options in Art, Textiles and Drama with an opportunity to study Advanced Mathematics, which leads to an AS course in Year 11.
This mix enables all students to create a programme which develops their aptitudes and interests.
